Last Saturday evening my husband, Bill, and I enjoyed a wonderful new experience that Bedford County has to offer. Sarah and Stefano Ferrari at LIFeSTYLE in Bedford have brought a true Italian experience home to us. We gathered with twenty other folks around an artfully arranged table to enjoy with friends, acquaintances and total strangers a delightful supper that included antipasto, primo and secondo piatto, contorno, formaggio e frutta, dolce and ended with expresso. This was an experience savored by body, soul and mind. You can experience the Trattoria at LIFeSTYLE any Saturday night. Just be sure to call ahead as it is by reservation only.
If you start seeing a bunch of blogging going on, you might want to blame this morning’s Beginner’s Blogging program. Art Costigan, Global Network Security Consultants, and Lynn Corbett, Home Nursing Agency, did a great job inspiring and educating the Business @ Breakfast attendees on why and HOW to blog. Here is the slide presentation of the program. Thanks to all who attended and especially to Art and Lynn. Anyone up for blogging for Intermediates?

First it was the Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual. Then it was the Employee Handbook. Now it is the Human Resource Policy Manual. We are blessed to be an organization made up of people with many talents who are generously willing to give of those talents to better the organization. The Manual is a prime example. Thanks to Michelle Speck, Human Resource Manager of UPMC Bedford Memorial, a small team made up of Don Brown from G & N Realty, Sharon Turkovich from theOffice of Senator John Eichelberger, and myself are putting together a top-notch, up-to-date manual to cover all those policies an organization must have. We’re not done yet but the whole process is a valuable educational experience. How is your Manual?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the annual Leadership Bedford County alumni picnic at the home of 2004 LBC grad, Nancy Pyle and her husband Dr. Greg Pyle. She and Helen Sickle, class of 2002 grad and LBC Alumni Coordinator, put together a beautiful afternoon gathering full of food and wonderful conversation.
Although not a grad myself, I have had the opportunity to sit in on many of the sessions over the past eight years and it has been wonderful getting to know the 140 now-graduates as they have become more leaderfull. It was great to see familiar faces and hear what everyone has been up to.
Have you considered becoming an LBC alum yourself? There’s still time to register for the class that begins in August so you could be an alum before the gathering next summer!

Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t but a very good way to find out would be to come to the “Why Blog?” Business @ Breakfast next week. Lynn Corbett and Art Costigan were in this morning to put the final touches on the presentation they will be making. It is a good one. You will go away knowing not just why you should blog but how! See for yourself. It is definitely worth the $15 price of admission and you’ll get breakfast in the bargain. Thanks to this blog you can register by comment. Or just call 623-2233 if you are a bit insecure.
That’s Business @ Breakfast, Thursday, July 17, 7:30 – 9:00 AM at the Arena Restaurant.

Today we polished some of the rough edges of a new program called Meet Bedford County that will premier this fall.
What is it? There are new folks coming to our community all the time. New people that will be calling Bedford County home. Meet Bedford County will be a full day that will jump start their knowledge about Bedford County, its history, business environment, political and civic structrues, and educational system. It will also give them an opportunity to interact with a cross section of community leaders.
When? October 29. Watch for more info coming your way.

250th Fort Bedford Commemorative Coins
August 20, 2008 by Carol Snyder
250th Commemorative Coin Set
The other day I gathered all the orders together for the 250th Fort Bedford Celebration Commemorative Coin sets that have been made over the past few months. To my surprise, the orders nearly matched the number of sets that we had made. The few remaining were snatched up almost immediately as I delivered a few sets to their new owners. All were gone and requests for sets continued. What to do?
I have begun a new list of folks who want the sets and will order more when the list reaches a reasonable ordering number. If you’d like a set or two, let me know. Cost for the boxed 5 coin set is $60.
Perhaps you don’t have a clue what I am talking about. Here is an excerpt of the story that accompanies each set of coins:
Strategically located in the Allegheny Mountains, Fort Bedford built in 1758, became the advance staging post for some 7000 American and British troops who were preparing to attack French Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh, PA) during the French & Indian War, thereby securing western Pennsylvania for the British Crown.
In keeping with historic tradition, the face of each coin in this set bears the original image of the Fort Bedfordblockhouse used in the bicentennial minting of 1958. The obverse of each coin, depicts a portrait of those who played a major role in the foundation of Fort Bedfordand indeed in the conflict – young George Washington, a native American warrior, General John Forbes withColonel Henri Bouquet and with a contemporary view of the 250thcelebrations, a tricorned cyclist, marking the ‘Tour of PA’ bicycle race which passed through Bedford as it followed the path of the Forbes Military Road from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.
Such a significant occasion demanded an artist of extraordinary talent and historic perception to conceive the portraiture on these coins. Chas Fagan, nationally known for his portraits in oil of President and Mrs. George Bush housed at the White House in Washington D.C. as well as historical sculptures at the National Cathedral graciously provided the artistic quality sought.
